‘Who funds you?!’ It’s a question you’re often asked when you work in alternative, anti-establishment media. A certain kind of liberal-elite midwit simply cannot fathom why you would want to stick up for free speech or democracy, why you might have a problem with eco-austerity or allowing blokes into women’s changing rooms, without being a mouthpiece of ‘dark money’.
The truth of course about spiked is that we are funded by you, our wonderful readers and listeners and viewers and supporters. Increasingly so, in fact – given how hostile the advertising world now is to radical voices like ours. Indeed, our audience and reach have exploded in recent years – and yet our advertising revenue has actually gone down. Snobby execs would rather lose out on selling to you, our readers, than grubby themselves by working with us.
Well, who needs them? For years now, as we’ve watched Big Tech censorship and cancel culture grow, we at spiked have been focussed on fortifying ourselves against the whims of woke corporates. We want to keep spiked free for all to read, because we want anyone, anywhere, to be able to read us. But to do so we ask those of you who love our work – who know the world is a much better place with spiked in it – to donate.
We’ve been blown away by your support this year. More than 70 per cent of our revenue now comes directly from you – from the members of spiked supporters, our online donor community, who give £5 or more every month, and from those of you who donate every so often, as and when you can. And as we head into Christmas, we’re asking those who do not give, those who might not have given for a while, and those who can afford to give a little bit more, to donate to us and fuel our fight for freedom, democracy and common sense in 2024.
Your money makes a huge difference. If all the people who read spiked on any given month gave us just £5 this Christmas we’d be able to fund our work for at least two years. And we’d be able to take spiked to the next level. We’ve had a great 2023. We’ve grown our readership, grown our team and produced hundreds of fantastic articles, essays, podcasts and videos. We also published Brendan O’Neill’s blockbuster new book, A Heretic’s Manifesto. And we’ve got more brilliant stuff in store for you – including a new original documentary we’ve been working on, which we can’t wait to put out. With your help, we can really shake things up next year.
So, if you love what we do and you have some money to spare this Christmas, please do consider making a donation. Anything you can give is greatly appreciated. Plus, those who donate £50 or more this Christmas will receive a beautiful, free spiked mug! (While stocks last; UK donors only.) Thank you all so much for your support. And from everyone at spiked, have a wonderful Christmas!
