Mouthpiece: life-affirming theatre

There’s a showcase of Canadian theatre pieces called CanadaHub at this year’s Edinburgh Fringe. The cream of the crop is Mouthpiece, a duologue so rousing that Jodie Foster asked the company to take the show to Los Angeles just days after first seeing it.
It makes its UK debut at the Fringe, performed by its original creators, Norah Sadava and Amy Nostbakken. The duo play the same character, performing the inner monologue of a woman who has just found out her mother has died. The two conflicting voices also launch into critiques of numerous feminist hot topics.
Sadava and Nostbakken are incredible performers. Wearing only white leotards and accompanied on stage by just a bath, they make what could otherwise be emotionally draining material shine, incorporating tremendous physical theatre and demanding choreography.
A beautiful, life-affirming and thought-provoking show.
