Reinvigorating the spirit of the First Amendment

Reinvigorating the spirit of the First Amendment

This Autumn, we explore the future for freedom in the 21st century.

Welcome to our US events hub

In Europe and America, liberty is not in good shape. Hate-speech laws continue to proliferate; universities are beset by campus speech codes; the religious are told that their faith is discriminatory; and the press is besieged by the easily offended. Fundamental freedoms are everywhere under threat.

On this events hub, you can find out about all of our upcoming and past events, read analyses of the threats to free speech, and listen to interviews with key figures in the free-speech wars.

30 OCTOBER, NEW YORK PUBLIC RADIO HQ, VARICK STREET, NYC

Produced in partnership with the National Coalition Against Censorship, this debate, featuring a transatlantic panel, explored the rise and rise of hate-speech legislation and codes, and asked whether a genuine commitment to freedom of speech means defending the right to speak hatefully, and to say things that the majority of people will find outrageous.

Press freedom in the twenty-first century

5 NOVEMBER, NEWSEUM, PENNSYLVANIA AVE, WASHINGTON, DC

Produced in association with, and hosted by, Newseum, and sponsored by News Corp, this day event featured speakers from the US and Europe exploring the state of press freedom today. In ‘Taming the messenger: the new threats to press freedom’, we asked why press freedom has fallen so far out of favour, even among liberals. In ‘The press in the 21st century: are we all journalists now?’, we explored the flourishing online challenge to traditional journalism, and ask if the rise of so-called citizen journalism is rendering the press obsolete or more important than ever?
