Afghanistan used to be on the hippy trail, where Westerners went to ‘find themselves’ as a way of running away from real life back home. George W Bush might not look much like a twenty-first century hippy, but his Afghan adventure looks like a similar exercise in escapism.
Bush is now talking about packing the B52s and daisy-cutters into his rucksack, and moving on. But Uncle Sam seems equally unlikely to find himself in Iraq or the Sudan. The place where the US president might best pursue his newfound interest in ‘nation-building’ is not Afghanistan, but America.
