Should misgendering be a crime?

The UK Labour Party is reportedly planning to make ‘misgendering’ a hate crime if it wins the next election. Here, Tom Slater explains why this would be a terrible idea. Inviting the police to clamp down on ‘hate’ has already had outrageous and censorious consequences in Britain. What the authorities consider to be a ‘hate crime’ often amounts to little more than speech someone takes offence to – and existing laws have already been used to persecute gender-critical campaigners.
