Sushi Tap Show 2: strangely incredible
After the storming success of its hilarious Sushi Tap Show last year, Japanese dance company Tokyo Tapdo have returned to the Fringe this year with a sequel named, appropriately enough, Sushi Tap Show 2.
The sell-out crowd burst into wild applause as the company sprung on to the stage in their signature pink suits. Before long they were tap dancing to Mozart’s ‘Rondo Alla Turca’ like demented Fred Astaires.
The show unfolds with an inspired mix of Western sophistication and Japanese surrealism. (A favourite routine involves a man dressed as a 10-year-old girl playing the recorder and urging his colleagues to do the Riverdance.) But the show also involves the effortless manipulation of endless random household objects, like cups, Frisbees, building blocks and traffic cones.
This second sell-out run proves that Tokyo Tapdo is incredibly strange, and strangely incredible.
