I have thought a lot about what the greatest innovation in my field is and it is difficult to choose one. I have, however, come to the conclusion that it must be the discovery of chloroform. When chloroform became available, it meant that a whole series of serious surgical operations, including cutting into body cavities, could be undertaken humanely in small animals and in horses and other farm animals.
Of course, major advances in anaesthesia have been developed since then but this was surely the greatest step forward.
