Over the past few decades, politicians and campaigners have brought sustainability to the centre of university life. Now, with crackdowns on climate-change ‘deniers’ and mandatory sustainability training for students and staff, sustainability has established itself as a powerful orthodoxy – which academics challenge at their peril. In a groundbreaking new report, the US-based National Association of Scholars (NAS) argues that sustainability is the biggest threat to academic freedom today.
