The inspiration for Shoot! Existential Photography is a long-forgotten fixture of the fairgrounds of the twentieth century – the photographic shooting gallery. Today one would expect a perfect aim and steady grip in a sideshow attraction to be rewarded by one of those irrepressible (Compare the) meerkat dolls, which have begun to rival Hello Kitty in funfair prize ubiquity. At these attractions, however, top-notch sharp-shooting earned you a photo of yourself in the act of firing the winning shot – for when a patron hit the bullseye, a mechanism would set-off a mounted camera behind the target.
