Putting the past on trial

In the latest taster video from the Battle of Ideas festival, Jennie Bristow discusses the increasing tendency to demonise our recent past.

In this speech, taken from ‘Putting the past on trial, burning dead witches?’, a debate which took place at the Battle of Ideas festival at London’s Barbican Centre on 20 October 2013, author and academic Jennie Bristow criticises the tendency to blame the behaviour of past generations, especially the baby boomers, for contemporary problems, be they environmental, social or economic.

Also speaking were Claire Fox (chair), director of the Institute of Ideas; Allan Massie, author and Spectator columnist; John Waters, author and columnist for the Irish Times and the Irish Mail on Sunday; and Professor Sir Simon Wessely, head of the Department of Psychological Medicine at King’s College London. The full debate is available at WORLDbytes in both video and audio formats.
