Welcome to the new spiked podcast, your audio fix of news and spiky discussion with spiked writers and guest experts.

If there’s one conclusion to be drawn from the events of recent weeks, it’s that Western elites are becoming ever-more disdainful of the demos. In India, the election of Narendra Modi as prime minister was met with scorn by Western onlookers, who saw the swell in support for Modi’s supposedly ‘fascist’ BJP party as proof the country was backsliding into sectarianism. Conchita Wurst, the bearded drag queen who trounced the competition at this year’s Eurovision Song Contest, became a battering ram for a culture war against Europe’s ‘backward’ East. And, a little closer to home, the mounting media smear campaign against Nigel Farage’s UK Independence Party (UKIP) revealed how alienated politicians have become from ordinary voters.

Writer Dolan Cummings, spiked‘s deputy editor Tim Black and spiked editor Brendan O’Neill weigh in, making the case that, amid all the brow-furrowing of recent weeks, people aren’t the irrational, bigoted beings the elites think they are.
