Emily Tresidder: a not-so-crazy comic

Topics Culture

The publicity for Emily Tresidder’s Crazy Is claims the show sports a ‘deep understanding of how hilariously crazy life is’. If that wasn’t enough to put you off, it turns out the whole ‘crazy’ concept is actually paper-thin.

Though it presents itself as a sort-of reflection on mental illness, the show consists of Tresidder telling us about ‘crazy’ things she’s done, ticking off all the 2016 twentysomething clichés, from Tinder disasters to Pokémon GO, along the way. It’s crazy in the same way people who say ‘I’m crazy, I am!’ are crazy – that is, not crazy, nor interesting, at all.

Throughout the show, Tresidder repeats punchlines and pulls faces to try to wring out a laugh. What’s worse, there are some inconsequential interactive segments, in which the audience is asked to fill in blanks in the text of a children’s book. These moments only show that members of the audience are often funnier than she is.
