Recognition that surface appearances while not necessarily untrue are hardly sufficient, still less essential: this is among the greatest of human achievements. It is the precondition for both social theory and interrogative, investigative journalism. Unfortunately it is also under threat from some of today’s journalists and social theorists. Thankfully, despite their efforts, the world we inhabit continually demands that a distinction be made between appearance and reality.
