John Martin
British Heart Foundation professor of cardiovascular science at University College London, director of the Centre for for Cardiovascular Biology and Medicine, and founder of Ark Therapeutics

In 2024 doctors will have a different position in society and in relation to illness. Patients will be self-educated about their diseases and about treatment, mostly through access to the internet. Many medical procedures and minor surgery will be performed by specialist technicians.

Stem cell therapy for the degenerative changes of ageing will be well established. There will be ethical discussion about the dilemma concerning life span being expanded to 200 years. Most organs will be rebuilt by a combination of stem cell and gene therapy.

Malaria and tuberculosis in Africa will have decreased dramatically because of a campaign by the European Union. However, in Africa and Asia heart disease will be the major cause of death, mostly through a high incidence of smoking, which in the northern hemisphere will have been outlawed as a form of suicide and heart disease associated with obesity will have decreased through education. The medical differences between the northern and southern hemispheres will have become very great.
