I became focused on science as a career while at secondary school – that is, between the ages of 12 and 14. The overriding reason for this focus was the exceptional quality of my mathematics and science teacher. He made mathematics, physics and chemistry seem easy so that my examination results at the equivalent of GCSE and A-level in Ireland were extremely good.
Pursuit of science at university then became almost automatic, leading to employment in the engineering sector. So it’s simple – top quality secondary school teachers will ensure that lots more children follow the path of science and engineering.
