debate

The Best and Worst of Medicine are two free debates at Wellcome Collection designed to stimulate public debate and argument about the best and worst ideas, phenomena, developments and practice in the world of medicine.

The first debate on the Best took place on 26 June, where four speakers put the case for the top-dog ideas in medical history.

Listen to the live debate:
The Best of Medicine (mp3 format).

(If you have problems, see below.)

The second debate on the Worst took place on 17 July, where four more experts denounced the worst-ever harebrained schemes in medicine and called for them to be chucked into the sin bin of history. We’ll have the audio for that soon.

Please note: some users of Windows may find mp3 audio files do not play correctly in their browser. If this is the case, right-click on the link and select ‘Save Target As…’ or ‘Save Link As…’ and save the file to your desktop. The file should then play correctly using a program such as Windows Media Player or QuickTime.

From April to July 2008, we asked experts, commentators and spiked readers to nominate the best and worst of medicine. Here's what they told us.

Please note the debate is now closed.
