 | Alastair Kent director of Genetic Interest Group While scientific research can rarely provide certainty, its methods provide a rational basis for exploring and understanding the world in which we live
The concept that I wish everyone understood is that while scientific research can rarely provide certainty, its methods provide a rational basis for exploring and understanding the world in which we live. Without this understanding, we must remain in ignorance, buffeted by circumstances over which we might otherwise be able to exercise at least a degree of control. This is not to claim arrogantly that science is capable of providing a complete explanation, or that other forms of inquiry are without value. Clearly, this is not the case. However, if people understood how science works, and what science is capable of revealing, then humanity would be better placed to respond to the challenges we face - in our efforts to create a just, equitable, healthy and sustainable world for ourselves and our children, that is in balance with our environment.
