 | Professor Zbigniew Jaworowski chair of the Scientific Council at the Central Laboratory for Radiological Protection in Warsaw, and former chair of the United Nations Scientific Committee on the Effects of Atomic Radiation The discovery of radioactivity
I should teach the world about the discovery of radioactivity. This discovery was a key to our knowledge of intrinsic patterns of the micro-world, and to our knowledge of the cosmos. Its important practical application is now nuclear energy - the fission form of which can support all of the needs of humankind for several thousand years, and the fusion form of which can support all the needs of humankind for several billion years. Access to this energy source enables the material and spiritual enrichment of humanity, above what one can now imagine. It renders possible changing us from a merciless exploiter of the biosphere, into the defender and benefactor of the biosphere, responsible for its safety and survival for eons to come. This knowledge and energy will help to realise a dramatic change, now emerging - a switch from evolution based upon accident and self-organisation, to evolution ruled by intellect. We shall humanise the biosphere of the Earth, and then the worlds beyond.
