Take nothing for granted, and use common sense to judge any piece of information
I would recommend that everyone ask themselves two questions that I ask my students. How do I know? And where does this piece of knowledge come from? This would teach everyone to take nothing for granted, and use common sense to judge any piece of information. Such an attitude is the root of scientific discovery.
