| | Ron Atkinson's racist tirade against Marcel Desailly was nothing short of a disgrace, and he had no choice but to resign (Offside, 29 April; Shedding Enlightenment, 29 April).
However, his slur does not give licence to the liberalite equality brigade to start ranting on about how racism is still a huge problem in football. I have been particularly irritated by suggestions that what Atkinson said was representative of the views held by football managers, players, and fans as a whole. Are we to assume, because of the stupid, racist ranting of a has-been TV pundit, that football is institutionally racist? I think not. Atkinson insulted the Chelsea captain in the most offensive manner possible, but let's not do football a disservice by this holding up as a representation of the modern game. Dan Factor, UK
